The Archibald Prize for portraiture, was first awarded in 1921 at the bequest of Jules Francois Archibald, who sought to support local artists and immortalise the memory of great Australians. Past winners include the late Brett Whiteley, and subjects have ranged from bush poet 'Banjo' Patterson to modern icons such as former Prime Minister Paul Keating. There is also a People's Choice Award, and the coveted Packing Room Prize, awarded by the burly blokes who unpack and hang the entries.
